After embarking on a hefty summer tour throughout Europe and the UK, Green Day decided to grace their presence in Manchester. The Mic's Kerenza Hudson talks you through the evening...
Spiked hair and a 90’s flash-back waived through the hair on the first night of the Saviours tour at the Old Trafford football stadium. With the crowd buzzing with nostalgia and excitement, the band’s mascot, a drunken pink bunny, fumbles around on-stage cartwheeling and busting out the worm on stage. The iconic pop-punk trio storm out on stage to the Star Wars theme, a classic opening for the band, following in the footsteps of their previous stadium tours including the latest Hella Mega Tour, this time with an exciting twist.
The band announced that this tour would not only be a celebration of their newest Saviors album, released in January this year, but commemorate the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot, 90s and 00s kids rejoice!
A brand-new show created with all the charm and grime of every Green-Day fans teenage years, with a huge blow-up cloud rising on stage with the Dookie album cover recreated behind the trio, the break through album blasted through Old Trafford. Immediately transported back into the angsty shows of 1994, When I Come Around sends the 2024 fans into a frenzy.
Tre cool comes out in a leopard print robe to finish up the playthrough of Dookie with the secret track All By Myself, a comedic ending to what was the time of my life with one of my favourite albums.
The drizzle over the stadium doesn’t stop the crowd from cheering and bringing an air of trashy pop-punk summer, with a rainbow appearing in the background in response. We reach American Idiot, an iconic song opening the album under the same name. With an equally impressive stage set of the hand holding a grenade heart, we crash into the fire fuelling Holiday.
Despite not having enough time in the set for 21 Guns the crowd is still emotionally evoked through Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up When September Ends. The band ends the show with a vibrant and punky pink background to showcase their songs from Saviors Bobby Sox. The incredible 37 track show ended with their classic Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) with power and vigour that was maintained through the insane two and a quarter set, impressive!
Despite the tour being named after their newest album, Saviors, only two songs from the album were played. Nevertheless, I believe a lot of people will agree with me in saying, I was over the moon to hear the classics and their arguably best two albums in full!
