The Mic's Sami De Jong talks you through the latest offering from Seattle outfit Nox Novacula...
Like the vast bulk of their output, the latest endeavour from Seattle-based death rock
band Nox Novacula is another moody, atmospheric hit. Distorted, reverberating
guitars, a heavy bassline, and lyrics which evoke the image of drowning in one’s sins
all lend the song the dark, sinister quality for which the band is well known.
Alongside Cursed and Sirens, Flood will be the third and most likely final single of
Nox Novacula’s second official album Feed the Fire.
Since their formation in 2017, Nox Novacula’s sound has consisted of a unique
marriage between classic goth rock influences and modern post-punk (among other
styles); here, a catchy 80s-inspired synth riff underscores the hypnotic and piercing
voice of Charlotte Blythe, who’s performance—whether intentionally or not—mirrors
the sirenic, theatrical vocal delivery of Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick, and as such
provides the track with psychedelic overtones akin to the ‘acid queen’ herself. Like
Nox Novacula’s most popular track Pray for Sleep, the abrupt key change in the
bridge section towards the end of the song effectively builds tension and anticipation
for the final chorus, all of which is finally, triumphantly released as Blythe allows her
voice to powerfully ring out.
