The Sofa- Wolf Alice

Following on from their fierce comeback track Bloom Baby Bloom, The Sofa is a glimmering dose of warmth and serenity. This latest single ahead of their fourth album The Clearing promises a new era for Wolf Alice. Boasting twinkling piano motifs, rousing string sections and laidback, lounging rhythms, the piece is completed to perfection by Ellie Rowsell’s signature hearty vocals and sincere storytelling style.

A daydream on a warm afternoon, this track unravels and lifts you up from a state of sopor. It has a soft and delicate touch, and as it progresses an overwhelming sense of new life is breathed into it. It feels like one of their most fresh and tender ruminations yet. It’s a piece which encourages the listener to sit back and revel in the chaos of life, to not get swept up by the strain.

In Ellie’s own words, The Sofa is about “not trying so hard to figure everything out, reflecting on getting older and trying not to agonise over things that have or haven’t happened in your life.”

The song isn’t just about personal growth and letting go of one’s own shame or disappointment though, it’s a reflection on adjusting to the struggles of balancing life with that of being in a band. There is certainly an overwhelming sense that Wolf Alice have found their place of peace with both this single, and hopefully the rest of the upcoming album. Referencing new and wider influences in their style, their confidence seems clear and sincere. Their hard work over previous years to lay down their mark with their music has come to fruition and the rewards for this seem to be unfurling right in front of us. They have reached the grassy glade between the mountains. With their latest, they are standing on the precipice of something great.
