Preview: Beat the Streets 2019

Beat the streets returns on Sunday 27th January at multiple venues around Nottingham’s city centre. The event will host more than 80 artists and all proceeds raised will be donated to local homeless charities including Framework who provide help and support to people who spend their days on the streets. Now, with less than two weeks until the event and the second wave of artists have been announced, is the perfect time to be getting your tickets for what will be another amazing day.

Framework has been helping the community for over ten years and helped nearly 12,000 people last year. With the money from Beat the Streets 2018 they were able to hire two new permanent members of staff and increased the accommodation they have available for rough sleepers. They provide support, accommodation, healthcare and education to the most vulnerable members of the community and aim to prevent homelessness entirely as “prevention is better than cure”. Framework do amazing work but can only continue to do so with donations and events such as Beat the Streets.

This year, Beat the Streets is looking to be another great success with some brilliant artists announced. It’s a great opportunity to get to see a wide variety of musicians, and to experience lots of different venues that you might not have got the chance to go to yet. Some highlights off the line up include Don’t Forget Rupert who headlined a sold-out Bodega show just before Christmas. They have a pop-punk sound similar to Panic at the Disco and never fail to lift the energy of a venue and get the crowd moving and jumping around.

Another band not to be missed are Lacey, an alternative rock band from Nottingham who recently performed at Rock City’s basement- also selling out. They’ve told fans that this year will bring another tour and a new album, and they’ve recently announced a couple of shows in Ireland supporting Bowling for Soup. Beat the Streets will be a great chance to catch them before they head off around the country.

The Mocking Jays have had a great year supporting the likes of Cassia at Rescue Rooms, As December Falls at Rough Trade and SHEAFS at Rock City. The five-piece have a cheeky indie-pop vibe and are always good fun to go and see play. If you see them at Beat the Streets you won’t be disappointed.

If you want to go and see AVA SAINT ahead of their UNICEF x The Mic show to experience their wild attitude and punk-rock style, then you definitely should as they’ve been added to the line up as part of the announcement of second wave artists today.

Other additions include regular attendees of Rescue Rooms open mic night- Acoustic Rooms, who were involved in a competition to perform before Christmas. The winner, Matthew Moore, will be playing Rescue Rooms main stage and then other competition winners will be playing in the Rescue Rooms bar through out the day, including Elliot Williams, Edi Johnston and Sam Barker.

Other acts to take note of are Super Furniture, Whisky Stain, Rob Green, George Gadd, Distant Blue, 94 Gunships and Tilly Greentree, and don’t be afraid to check out new musicians throughout the day too as you might end up finding your next favourite artist.

Kicking off at 1pm Sunday afternoon and going on until the early hours of Monday morning, Beat the Streets is going to be a fantastic day of music and fun whilst also raising important funds for charities carrying out life changing work to provide a better future for everybody in Nottingham. Tickets can be bought from any of the venues taking part or online and be sure to catch The Mic’s coverage of the day!
