Over the summer, Bondax seem to have rocketed their way into the public eye, or rather ear, with their fresh and euphoric beats that beg for a good dance and sing-a-long. Their sound is perfect for people who love their house to be melodic and soulful rather than minimal. I went to go and check them out at Nottingham’s own Rescue Rooms to see if they lived up to the hype.
The young duo went for a unexpectedly serene set list overall, but judging the energetic crowd well, they opened with a ‘No Diggity’ remix then delivered their big hit ‘Giving It All’ at the end of their set. And oh how the crowd gave their all. Bondax brought with them two very talented young singers to deliver their lyrical tunes; transforming what could easily have been a run-of-the-mill DJ set into an engaging live experience.
Unfortunately the supporting acts were poorly received as it appeared the crowd had turned up for Bondax, and Bondax only, despite the fact they formed an eclectic mix of up-and-coming DJs. Tropics opened the line up with their chilled polyrhythmic vibes, followed by the 90s house-inspired Bodhi. Finally after Bondax, the party-perfect child prodigy that is Karma Kid rounded off the night remixing Bondax’s own material.
Rescue Rooms rarely disappoints as a music venue as it’s small enough for intimacy but with a decent sound system and a balcony that offers a secluded alternative viewpoint and dance floor. Considering the event was ‘sold out’, I was surprised by how sparse the floor was even when the main act hit the stage. Nevertheless this did allow for a stress-free night and copious amounts of dancing.
Overall Bondax put on an incredibly confident live show that more than superseded their young age (both 19 years old). Anyone would think they’d been performing for years. For anyone who has not heard much of their music, I would certainly recommend ‘Baby I Got That’ and ‘Gold’ for that house party playlist or for summery feel-good vibes on those dark coursework-writing days to come.
