Its less than a week until Dot to Dot returns to Nottingham to kick off the festival season! Held across almost 60 venues in Nottingham, Bristol and Manchester, the one-day-event showcases a varied line up of established and up-and-coming artists. A joy of D2D is its promotion of local artists by having headliners play all 3 cities while local bands populate the setlist of their respective cities.
As previous winner of UK Festival Award for Best Metropolitan Festival, this spring bank holiday welcomes the 11th year and it’s safe to say that the lineup is just getting better!
With genres encompassing indie, electro and alternative, ticket holders have the chance to see headliners Mystery Jets, Augustines, The Temper Trap and many more. Amongst the prestigious venues Rock City, Bodega and Rescue Rooms are an eclectic mix of smaller or more unusual venues including Pitcher and Piano, The Ugly Bread Bakery, the Alley café and Rough Trade, all of which will provide the perfect backdrop to festival (and not to mention a cracking lunch rather than the usual junk you buy at a festival). The action kicks off in Rescue Rooms bar and peaks with the greatly anticipated Mystery Jets at 22:00 on the main stage in Rock City though music goes on into the night with a secrete headliner at Bodega in the early hours.
Mystery Jets last set foot in Nottingham in January, showcasing their latest album release ‘Curve of the Earth’ at an intimate gig in Rough Trade. They are described as a “Syd Barret worshipping indie outfit”, having started out as a family project formed in the early 90’s when lead singer Blaine was just 12. Six fantastic albums later, the indie pop-rock, post punk revival band continue to sell out venues all over the world and have further upcoming appearances at Boardmasters and Field Day festival later this summer.
Johnny Lloyd, previous front man of the Camden based indie rock band Tribes, is also not one to miss this Dot to Dot festival. He’s back with a spine tingling solo project featuring stunning singles “Happy humans” and “Pilgrims”. After appearances in Bodega earlier this year, he is definitely a Nottingham favorite.
Playing a headline slot at Trent SU are the mighty Temper Trap, giving fans a chance to hear songs from their new album, Thick as Thieves, before its release in June. They’re sure to play classics like Sweet Disposition, a perfect song to get people in the mood for summer.
Hailed as “one of the most exciting bands in the uk”, The Hunna are going from strength to strength and will be playing D2D as one of two appearances in Notts left for this year, with their headline tour to follow in Autumn. Also worth a view are Mt Wolf who have a busy summer ahead of them so catch their unique brand of multi-layered electronic and acoustic music while you can. D2D is a fantastic showcase for bands who may not otherwise get a chance to play to those who aren’t familiar with them. One very local band to play are Tusk, only recently formed by students at the University, they’re rapidly amassing fans and will no doubt accumulate more at the festival.
If we implore you to do anything it would be to just have a wander about and you may find a hidden gem; D2D has a very impressive roster of alumni, including Tom Odell, Jake Bugg and The 1975, so go with open eyes and open ears, you never know which future stars you may catch in a very intimate setting.
We look forward to joining the Dots with you in a week’s time!
