The summer of 2013 may be rapidly fading, but it will leave memories that are guaranteed to hang around for much longer than those rare months of sun.
Whether you were soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the hottest summer in years, or perched on the edge of your seat as Andy Murray triumphed at Wimbledon and England reclaimed the Ashes, or even if you were enjoying music’s finest at Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, Latitude, Isle of Wight, Hard Rock Calling, Secret Garden Party or any of the other fantastic festivals available, this summer has definitely produced some iconic and summery tunes that will bring back fond memories for years to come.
In the spirit of a summer where British sport and culture came to the fore, British music also produced some real gems. National hero Frank Turner released Tape Deck Heart, and his trademark folk/punk sound was a great soundtrack to a blistering summer. Londoners Bastille took the festival scene by storm, with appearances at Glastonbury, Bestival and T in the Park just part of a busy summer that saw them also support Muse in their stadium tour. This summer also saw new singles from the ever-popular Arctic Monkeys and the indie favourite Two Door Cinema Club. If you took a trip to the continent, why not reminisce with some of the best music coming out of Europe this summer? Passionate and fast-paced, Crystal Fighters returned with Cave Rave, a new album that features their mix of indie electronica and traditional Basque instruments that perfectly embodies the summer sun. Also from Europe came Bankrupt!, a new album from Phoenix, a light and energetic alternative rock band hailing from Versailles, France. Bankrupt! is an album that fits in with Phoenix’s image of being one of the coolest bands on the indie scene. One band that caught my own personal attention this summer was The Other Tribe, a Bristolian 5-piece band that practices a unique brand of music, somewhere between indie and electronica, featuring plenty of synth and a characteristic “tribal” undertone that, combined with their exceptional live shows, are the perfect backdrop to this summer, and many to come.
