The Mic is proud to once again work with our long standing sponsors The Bodega to offer an exclusive announcement of a quarterly new music showcase at the venue. Tempo aims to showcase four of the venue’s favourite rising artists from Nottingham and beyond, with no constraints on genre.
Driven by its impartiality towards genre, each show will stand as an unpredictable and distinctive event, with the showcase bound by the ethos of promoting blossoming talent. This morning, The Mic is able to exclusively announce the first two artists performing at the first-ever Tempo showcase on Wednesday 3rd June 2020.
An artist first championed by The Mic in our biggest ever print edition back in September 2019, Jonny Olley has adopted a brazen approach to contorting life’s dexterous challenges in a sullen, post-university environment, the roughened singer-songwriter finally emerging with a drive and vision that will take centre stage at The Bodega. Ahead of his hugely successful headline show at Acoustic Rooms in January, The Mic published an extensive feature interview with Olley as part of our FOCUS spotlight feature, which saw the troubadour narrate his artistic journey and explore the influences that have lead to the musician he is today. On booking Olley for the show, Sam Keirl, Promotional Manager at The Bodega said ‘We’ve known Jonny here for a little while now and his voice and lyricism is just something else! Razor-sharp wordplay over ear-worm hooks is always a recipe for success. He’s blown us away solo so it’ll be great to see him with the full band set-up. He’s certainly a local lad to keep an eye on as he prepares to release his debut material later this year.’
The second artist to be announced before the full-line up is disclosed is Leeds-based quintet Luca Blue, who will arrive at Tempo for their Bodega live debut in June, having released their debut single in November 2019. On the five-piece, Keirl highlights his enthusiasm for bringing them to the iconic venue. ‘Luca Blue have again been on our radar for a little while but will be making their Bodega debut this June. They formed at Uni in Leeds and they released their debut single Narrow last year which is a smooth synth-pop gem, with a few funk and soul influences thrown in there too. Really excited to be bringing them back to Notts, having put on a killer show at Dot To Dot Festival last year. It’ll only be their second show outside of Leeds so bring it on!’
After celebrating their twentieth birthday last year, The Bodega have already entered 2020 in style, with an array of spectacular sold-out shows from the likes of Sancho Panza, The Mysterines, IDER, Arlo Parks and Frank Moody, and the establishment of Tempo as a quarterly showcase epitomises the venue’s status as an esteemed supporter of growing talent. When asked about the decision to create Tempo, Keirl explained that ‘we had the idea for quite a while now so we’re so glad we’ve got such a great line-up together for our first event and we can’t wait for more in the future. The aim is to pull some of our favourite artists together, quite early in their career and showcase them on our stage in Nottingham.'
'The aim for the future is to just bring great artists to a wider audience at the start of their careers. We’ll have some Notts artists that we’ve seen and love and there’ll also be some bands from further afield too that we’d like to show off to the great musical city that is Nottingham. On this first event for example, there’s an indie-pop band from Edinburgh who we saw last year and we’ve managed to get them back for a one-off show which is really cool. We want people to come with an open mind and hopefully go away as big fans of these new artists.’
Tickets go on sale at 10am today when the complete line-up is released by the venue and on Facebook @temponotts. Tickets are £6, but Mic readers are able to purchase discounted tickets via the following link http://www.alttickets.com/tempo-nottingham-s-new-music-showcase-tickets-presale-1420.
