With just days to go before their new record “The Spark” is set to drop, plus a huge U.K. and European tour supported by Lower Than Atlantis planned for this winter, we had the pleasure to speak to the immensely talented frontman of Enter Shikari, Rou Reynolds, about the history of the band, who his influences are and what’s next for Enter Shikari.
(1) So how did Enter Shikari first come together?
The band formed 14 years ago properly when Chris, our guitarist joined but the other 3 of us were playing in a band before that back when we were still in school.
(2) Where did the name Enter Shikari come from?
It came from my uncle’s boat actually when I used to spend time on there, Shikari is an Indian word that translates as hunter and the word stuck with me. The bands around us were choosing similar names and we wanted to stand out and show we were doing something.
(3) Who would you say have influenced Enter Shikari’s sound?
A lot of different bands really, The Prodigy, Rage Against the Machine, Refused, Blur, Radiohead
(4) Would you say you prefer being in the studio recording new material or playing live shows?
Definitely being in the recording studio, I love the process of creating new music we have. The tours can become grating towards the end after doing so many shows but it’s how we make money to do this.
(5) What was the first music festival you went to as a band or as a fan?
It would have to be Reading Festival for both.
(6) If you had to only play festivals or headline sets for the rest of your career which would you prefer?
Festivals as my favourite thing is to play outside as it creates this primitive, raw atmosphere.
(7) With a back catalogue as extensive as yours meaning so many choices, do you have a favourite song to play live?
Recently it has been some of the new stuff, especially “Live Outside” as we’ve been playing it during festival season and the energy it creates is amazing.
(8) What are your ambitions as a band for the future?
I feel like we’ve gotten more and more ambitious as the years go on. This started as just a hobby and its now grown into us doing arena tours. It inspires and really gives us a creativity boost to create albums that each have their different sound.
(9) If you could have written one song in history yourself what would you have preferred it to be?
There’s a piece of classical music called The Rite of Spring by a Russian composer called Igor Stravinsky. I’d like to have written it to understand how someone can write a piece of music like that. (The piece is performed by a full orchestra and lasts over half an hour.)
