As another week passes without live music, The Mic’s President Tristan Phipps offers his picks of the latest selection of cool and quirky events happening online from local, national and international artists in this week's 'Isolation Stations'.
As Britain enters its fifth week in lockdown, music lovers up and down the country are still finding themselves chomping at the bit. With no end in sight to the lack of live music and festivals being cancelled week by week, as usual, it is up to the musicians to save the day. This week has seen the release of new music from the likes of Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes, Charli XCX, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and Slaves guitarist Laurie Vincent, whose new project LARRY PINK THE HUMAN has sparked fervour into Slaves fans across the country. With this tantalising array of new music, it is only fitting that this week should deliver on the livestream front as well. To fill the void of live music, we at The Mic will again aim to provide our selection of the best artist livestreams for the coming week.
Our good friends at the Bodega have yet again been working tirelessly to keep us entertained throughout this live-music-less period. Last week saw sensational stay-at-home sets from Nottingham favourites Vega Bay and BLLE, with a guest offering from London-based grunge quartet Lazy Day. This Tuesday brings us an evening show from Midlands three-piece Fading Blonde, who’ll be gracing the Bodega Facebook at 8pm. Having recently announced an upcoming headline show at Rough Trade once the lockdown has been lifted, the band will surely be keeping in high spirits. If cheery, upbeat, indie is your thing, then be sure not to miss one of Nottingham’s most exciting trios.
Wednesday sees a battle between the US and Australia, as we are frankly spoiled for choice with livestreams from both indie-rock royalty DMA’s and the ‘kings of trap’ Offset and Young Thug. UK viewers can relive DMA’s recent conquering of Brixton Academy live on Facebook and YouTube from 9PM BST, alongside the opportunity to win some exclusive DMA’s merch (check their socials for details). After viewing their Timeless set, you may be feeling the need for a Lay Down, but if it’s not Too Soon (I really am sorry), then get over to Oculus Venues on Facebook to catch Offset and friends. Teaming up with Rich The Kid, Young Thug, and Saint Jhn, the Migos rapper will be live at midnight BST (4pm PDT) performing to raise funds for the Atlanta Community foodbank. How wholesome.
Thursday brings us entertainment from loveable singer-songwriter Zuzu, with the third instalment of her ‘Tutorial Thursdays’. Due to the volume of adoring fans sending in their covers, Zuzu has decided to show them all how it’s done and entertain at the same time. This Thursday at 6pm BST, the Liverpudlian singer will talk us through how to play new releases What You Want and How It Feels, and as always, she welcomes fans to send in their covers afterwards!
Following this, talented singer-songwriter Joe Baxter will be live-streaming from the Bodega Facebook page from 8:05pm, following the NHS clap. A true musician, Baxter honed his talent at the Birmingham Conservatoire, where he studied jazz. Since then, the soulful star has joined forces with talents such as JP Cooper and Jake Isaac, and he certainly looks like one to keep an eye on across the Midlands circuit.
Things show no signs of slowing down on Friday, as tribal punk ensemble Idles will be inducing carnage in living rooms across the country, as they stream a special rerun of their recent show at Le Bataclan, followed by a Q&A with frontman Joe Talbot. For the true fanatics, every Idles member will be engaging in a Q&A throughout the week from the 27th to the 30th April. Let’s just hope they keep their clothes on for once.
For the night owls, Friday midnight brings us the third instalment of Camille Christel’s “I Can’t Sleep Again” series, with the talented BLLE. Having wooed us all on the Bodega Instagram recently on Sunday evening, the local starlet is certainly keeping busy! The Mic has been told that we can expect a stripped back, acoustic rendition of one of her recent releases.
Saturday sees the return of Conducta’s crib, following an unexpected week off to “recharge”. Despite his out-of-this-world mixes, it does go to show that he really is human after all. While we can’t know for sure what he will be showcasing next Saturday, it is certain to be a lively and uplifting two hours. Catch him from between 8-10pm on either Twitch, Instagram, or Facebook. If garage isn’t up your street, then maybe Scottish revelations Vistas will be! Frequent visits to Nottingham over the past two years have certainly raised their profile in the city, whilst support slots with The Wombats, The Kooks, and Circa Waves have placed them firmly in the gaze of the indie fans across the country. Expect a variety of covers, alongside hits new and old from this tight-knit trio, in what is certain to be a barrel of laughs.
To wrap up the week, local starlet Charity Stow will be taking over the Bodega Facebook page from 8pm. A superb vocalist, with inspirations ranging from The Beatles to Daughter, Charity has a real penchant for writing delicate and enticing melodies: it’s no surprise to see her listed as Bodega’s spotlight artist of the week.
Enjoy as many of the streams as possible, and we hope you engage in everything that the industry is doing to get through the pandemic of Covid-19.
