An excitable sell-out crowd, a venue as good as any Manchester has to offer and a band at the very top of their game made for a memorable gig on Tuesday night as Jaws brought their own distinct style of indie-rock to the North West as part of their three-show tour in preparation for festival appearances at, amongst others, Live at Leeds, this coming weekend.
You wouldn’t have thought that Jaws had played at Sound Control, a short walk from the host venue this time, less than 6 months previously such was the level of anticipation amongst a crowd primarily made up of young people. Two sold out gigs in such a time period, in a city to which the band held no ties previous to starting out, is certainly something to be admired.
The gig itself did not disappoint, as the four-piece, led by frontman Connor Schofield, took the crowd through a collection of tracks from both 2014 debut record ‘Be Slowly’ and November’s follow up ‘Simplicity’. Starting with frenetic renditions of two singles from ‘Simplicity’ in ‘Just a Boy’ and ‘Stay In’, it was clear that fans of the group have taken to the second album in the same way they did the first, singing back every lyric and even some of the guitar riffs! An early highlight following this was without question the slower tempo and emotive lyrics of ‘Think Too Much, Feel Too Little’, during which half of the room appeared to rise onto shoulders, making for quite the spectacle.
The full 14-song set lasted just over an hour and the pace never let up, with their best undoubtedly saved for the final four songs, for which the band raced through ‘Be Slowly’ and ‘Right In Front Of Me’ to close the first part of the show, before returning to complete a two-song encore consisting of early EP track and old fan-favourite ‘Donut’, followed by a real crowd favourite in ‘Gold’ to bring the curtain down on a fantastic performance. It must be said that those heading to any of the shows later this week and next month, be them festival appearances or headline shows, will not be disappointed, and it would appear that there is still much to come on the horizon for this group of lads from Birmingham.
