Children of Zeus employ elements of RnB, hip hop and soul to create a unique sound. Over the past few years they’ve performed for Soulection and the BBC, and now they were coming to Nottingham. With exciting support acts, Leo Bungay couldn’t miss this one, as he reviews the show for The Mic.
The night started off with an enthralling set from Nottingham’s very own MELONYX, a soul duo consisting of Georgia Copeland and Nadia Layota. Donned in matching 70s inspired dresses, they captivated the crowd with their impressive range and tuneful harmonies, performing cuts from their latest EP Black Elixir. Following next was a local emcee Juga-Naut. His slick, socially aware rhymes were contrasted nicely by some hard tracks hyping up the Nottingham audience, bringing some energy and excitement to the crowd who, after being initially hesitant, warmed up to him towards the end of his set, eventually chanting along to his catchy hooks. Juga-Naut is definitely one to keep an eye on, and his last project, Smoke Filled Room, is well worth a listen. The final supporting act was a third Nottingham resident Harleighblu, backed up by a live band consisting of drums, guitar and keyboard. The Neo soul artist has been releasing projects for the last decade or so, and sure was having fun performing to a live crowd again, feeding off the energy of her band and audience alike, fuelling the excitement in the room.
Now it was time for Children of Zeus. Hailing from Manchester and half way through the tour for their latest album, Balance, Children of Zeus were ready to put on a show for the Nottingham crowd. The set started with Tyler Daley singing off stage before walking on with Konny Kon to a loud cheer from the eager audience. With smooth bars from Konny and even smoother singing from Tyler, Children of Zeus had the crowd in admiration from the very start. The setlist compromised of songs from Balance, such as the upbeat I Know and melodic Love Again, interspersed with fan favourites such as Smoke With Me and Still Standing which were sung along to by all.
''Children of Zeus greatly impressed, further highlighting the talents of both members as well as adding extra depth to their already great sound''
I’ve been a fan of their records for a little while now, but watching them live really added another dimension to their music. Whether it was the extra verses delivered by Konny Kon or the rawer sound, it was a different and, in my opinion, more engaging listen than the cleanly produced studio albums.
When the opening of one of their biggest hits no love song played, the room erupted into noise, with Konny controlling each half of the room to sing separate parts of the hook. It was an awesome moment, and the duo looked like they had a great time sharing it with a live audience.
Before I knew it the set was coming to a close, however as soon as Children of Zeus had left the stage the the crowd were cheering for more from the duo. They came back onstage to perform two final tracks before departing and giving thanks to the crowd who came out to support them. Overall Children of Zeus greatly impressed, further highlighting the talents of both members as well as adding extra depth to their already great sound. I look forward to seeing them again when they return.
