Live Review: The Lathums @ Rock City

Millie Hopcott shares her thoughts as Wigan wonders The Lathums impress at Rock City

The night instantly started on a high with support act Andrew Cushin who, at the young age of 21, already has the maturity and grounding of a voice much older and weather-worn. His catchy songs, coupled with his cheeky interactions with the crowd, really fuelled the excitement in the venue.

First on stage for the Lathums were band members Scott, Johnny, and Ryan, who enticed the crowd with their excited smiles and eagerness to get playing. The atmosphere in Rock City was electrified when frontman Alex stepped on to stage wearing his famous beige trench coat, guitar in hand, ready to wow the crowd.

''The band were met with equal adoration from the crowd, with football-like chants erupting any time there was a gap in the set''

Starting the show with a bang, the Wigan boys played Fight On, a fan favourite to get the crowd dancing. It was clear to see how much the band enjoyed doing what they do, with broad smiles across their faces any second they weren’t catching their breath. When talking to the crowd, you could see how they genuinely enjoy what they do and were delighted to be in Nottingham on the evening after their debut album How Beautiful Life Can Be reached number 1 in the UK charts. The band were met with equal adoration from the crowd, with football-like chants erupting any time there was a gap in the set, celebrating the band and their UK number 1 album.

With the soundtrack of 2,000 fans chanting ‘'UK number 1'’ to the tune of Baby Give It Up by KC & The Sunshine Band, frontman Alex danced on stage adorned with a grinning face and clear gratitude to be performing. You don’t have to look far to see the band's genuine appreciation for their growing success. On the day before the chart release, the band account tweeted that regardless of what happens in the charts, they knew they had “the best fans in the world” and that they are happy to be just “4 mates who love making music, and as long as that keeps happening that’s all that matters”.

The Lathums definitely deserve their number 1 album as their live shows leave nothing behind - they give their all to every song. Despite the few technical issues which arose during the gig, the band sailed on, not letting anything shake their high and excitement, which undoubtedly fed into the crowd. “Everything is okay”, reassured Alex with a smile whenever there was a sound issue, demonstrating his calm and humble demeanour.

Ultimately, The Lathums’ live shows demonstrate how down-to-earth and likeable the band members are, and the sheer talent they all possess as individuals. They certainly did not disappoint.
