Party Cannon @ Rock City Beta, Live Review

Party Cannon - perhaps a deceptive name for a band so heavy. Managing Director Jake Longhurst takes a trip to Rock City's Beta room and offers their thoughts.

Party Cannon, the band that put the word party into death metal (somehow, I still don’t know where it goes). With a logo stylised after the Toys R Us font, and a sense of humour about as well developed as the average secondary school kid, the band’s infectious brand of fun combined with their ludicrously heavy tunes was arguably the perfect Tuesday evening pick-me-up.

Supported by Godeater, a Glaswegian four-piece melding death metal and post-metal into some unholy combination that manages to be both emotive and brutal, the evening was an absolute riot. Godeater are one of the best supporting acts I’ve ever seen that I wasn’t already aware of, with songs like The Hatchet providing an ethereal atmosphere that was suddenly quashed by an onslaught of heaviness unlike anything you’ll see at near any other gig. They were fun between songs but as soon as they started playing, the music became the top priority and they absolutely crushed each and every song. A more than deserving band of the supporting slot on this tour, and one who should be playing far larger venues in the near future (big metal bands, go check them out and take them on tour!).

Party Cannon, however, had a slightly different tack for their set - the fun was very much not restricted to just the gaps between each song. With a stage full of beach balls being chucked into the audience as they walked onstage, alongside some inflatable lightsabers, an inflatable guitar, and even an enormous dolphin later in the set, it was clear to see that the headliners were only here to provide an outlet for the mother of all parties. They are a true sight to behold, with more gurning than you could find at even the biggest DnB festival, and a crowd that lapped up each and every new song and new development in the inflatables department. The band played a sizeable amount of their most recent release, 2022’s Volumes Of Vomit, including fan favourites 1000% and Nauseating and Unpalatable. Some enduring memories of the evening include the quote “This song isn’t about having sex! It’s actually about doing drugs, but I don’t do drugs because I’m a good boy” and the singer sharing a tender moment with yours truly, whereby I was sat on the edge of the stage with the inflatable guitar and he was stood over me, each yelling at the other.

"[...] it was clear to see that the headliners were only here to provide an outlet for the mother of all parties."

I can’t say I’ll ever see a band quite like Party Cannon come along in my lifetime, purely because of the genuine intensity and heaviness of their songs, which are absolutely brilliant in their own way, combined with the ludicrously fun live show that the band are capable of. Godeater are a different beast, with a more serious approach to music that somehow perfectly set the crowd up to go wild for the finale. Their tour of the UK is sadly finished, but if you have the ability to see them on another tour, I would wholeheartedly recommend doing so.
