Preview: Green Man Festival

Freya Martin previews the mystical and creative Green Man festival that brims with happiness and hope in the often neglected corner of the UK, South Wales.

Nestled deep in the rolling hills of the Brecon Beacons, South Wales, is the fabled land of Green Man, only present for a few short days each year but a hive of music, arts and colourful creativity. Long the territory of the IPA-slurping 6 music listener, in recent years the festival has increasingly become a destination for those of us searching out the best acts in alternative music and culture. This year’s line-up boasts yet another round of cracking headliners: Swedish folk-rock giants First Aid Kit, 80s electronica legends Devo and the psychedelic Spiritialized. Alongside these heavyweights is a faultless bill of names from across the musical spectrum, including Aussie punks Amyl and the Sniffers, our favourite kraut rockers Squid and disco-dance icons Confidence Man. Aside from the music, Green Man will play host to a number of comedians and writers in conversation at the Talking Heads stage, as well as showcasing immersive art installations in the woods. And of course, it will play host to the Green Man itself, a mammoth sculpture constructed from natural materials which dominate the main arena for the duration of the festival, until the ceremonial burning brings the festival to an awe-inspiring close at midnight on Sunday evening. Green Man is a joyful haven of creativity and jaw-dropping music, so what are you waiting for? Grab yourself a pint of Green Man Growler and join me in the fields.
