Preview: Leeds Festival

Bethany Coldwell

This summer, hopefully accompanied by some sunshine, Bramham park opens its gates once again for one of the UK's largest and most musically diverse festivals - Leeds festival! Beth Coldwell shares her thoughts on this staple of British culture.

Although in recent years the festival has veered away from its roots as a rock festival which featured much heavier artists with the likes of Rage against the Machine and Foo Fighters, it has gradually formed into a much more varied affair, with genres from indie-rock to drum and base finding their place on the many stages over the weekend. This year, the line-up boasts a diverse collation of bands and artists, and 2 main stages, with the headliners ranging from Sam Fender and Billie Eilish to Lewis Capaldi, the crowd will be sure to experience every emotion possible over the course of the festival.

Sunday’s headliners, The Killers, whilst being the band I am most excited to see following their UK tour dates in summer 2022, are perhaps one of the only acts that are directed towards an older audience, as the line-up seems to offer a weekend most accessible to a younger generation. Although the headliners offer an alternative-indie-rock feeling to the festival, the Leeds and Reading 2023 is sure to host something for everyone. From upbeat dance music with Becky Hill and Caity Baser to low-fi, indie-bedroom-pop with Steve Lacey, the line-up is sure to appeal to a large audience. Rising stars Easy Life, are set to play after a recent UK tour selling out venues from Manchester to Cardiff, which I can’t wait to see. After attending one of their first shows at Waterfront in Norwich in 2019, it will be an honour to see how far they’ve truly come!

Alongside them, Inhaler will take to the stage after their recent UK tour which followed their triumph in supporting Arctic Monkeys on their 2022 tour. Saturday then hosts BRIT and GRAMMY winners Wet Leg, and of course, no British summer would be complete without Declan Mckenna playing Brazil in the middle of a field under the blazing sunshine! With Friday’s line-up including the likes of Coin, Vistas and TV girl, Leeds fest will be a summer staple in living my late-teen indie dream. With many more acts to be announced, it is shaping up to be a whirlwind of a weekend; Leeds was my first-ever festival, and I can’t wait to be back.
