Reading Festival Curates a Supergroup

Jake Longhurst was at Reading Festival over the weekend and had a chat with plenty of bands, asking them all two important questions, the first of which was “If you could curate a supergroup, who would be in that supergroup?”. So here is what your favourite band’s dream band would look like:

Joy Valence & Brae

Joey Valence & Brae chose Caleb Shomo to go upfront first, with Turnstile as the band, joined by themselves, Tyler The Creator, as well as Pharrell Williams to make a band that draws musically from a similar pool to them. ,

bbno$

Mixing some really wide influences, bbno$ (pronounced Baby No Money) chose Queen to mix with Thugger and Playboi Carti, including Freddie Mercury, with his decision informed in no small part by the desire to see the interplay between Mercury and Thugger onstage.

Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes

With one of the most bombastic bands in the world I was expecting something interesting and I was not at all surprised by their curation. We got an enormous band selected by Dean and Frank, with the rhythm section being comprised of Flea on bass, Dave Grohl on drums and Gaz (from the Rattlesnakes) on percussion. There would be an electronic section of Elliot and Tank (both Rattlesnakes) on keys and synth respectively, then Tom Morello joining on rhythm guitar, Dean on leads, and then Frank on backing vocals with Eric from The Animals on lead vocals. The lyrics would be written by Alex Turner joined by Lynks on the song structure. This would be one hell of a supergroup!

As It Is

Going for a more minimalist approach to a pop punk/hardcore band, As It Is have got Travis Barker on drums, with AFI’s Jade Puget and Davey Havok filling out the rest of the group.

Witch Fever

Alisha from Manchester’s own Witch Fever came over to chat bands, and her supergroup is one of my personal favourites across the weekend. Kurt Cobain on vocals, with John Bonham on drums, but paired with the guitarist and bassist of Witch Fever, Alisha and Alex.

BILK

The supergroup BILK came up with was... BILK. They are their own supergroup. Respect.

Kid Kapichi

The boys each came up with someone to replace themselves on their respective instruments, so Jack chose Freddie Mercury, Eddie chose Lemmy to jump on bass, and Ben and George chose half of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to replace them with John Frusciante and Chad Smith rounding out the group!

WARGASM (UK)

Milkie Way’s supergroup was very sexy: comprising her, Prince and Shania Twain. Sam Matlock’s was a little more dour, with Kurt Cobain being joined by Thom Yorke and Adrianne Lenker with himself as producer, to make a devastatingly sad acoustic group with Prodigy overtones, that frankly reflects WARGASM massively in vibe.

Crawlers

The band each chose their own supergroup, with Holly Minto (lead vocalist) going first. Her choices were Matty Healy on vocals, Amy Woodall of Crawlers on guitar, Kim Gordon on bass guitar and Geoff Barrow on drums. Next, Amy Woodall chose what might be the band of the weekend with a combo of ABBA and N-DUBZ, featuring Pitbull. Harry Breen (drummer) chose Zac De La Rocha for vocal duties, Hendrix on guitar, Flea on bass and himself behind the kit. Finally Liv Kettle (bassist) chose Kurt Cobain on vocals, Dave Grohl on drums, Justin Chancellor on bass and Orianthi on guitars. This was a whole mix of influences, really showing off how varied the tastes within the band are!

Bastille

The band chose a supergroup between them, each choosing a member to fill in their slot as Kid Kapichi did. Dan chose Lauryn Hill on vocals, Will chose Jaco Pastorius on guitar and bass, Kyle chose Ray Charles on keys, and Chris chose Karen Carpenter on drums. With the pop-rock style of the band, this wasn’t what I’d envisioned the group to be but it’s a fine set of choices and would make for an excellent group!

M’Way

Skewing towards his style of music, M’Way hasn’t chosen a band, but a group of musicians to collaborate instead. Featuring Headie One, Moneybagg Yo, Lil Durk, K-Trap and Babyface Ray, the group covers a wide range of hip-hop/rap subgenres, and with Tay Keith producing it adds a whole new layer to the impressive selection already at hand.

That wraps things up with this fun little feature, but hopefully it won't be the last time you see Curate A Supergroup!
