Reverend and the makers played a fantastic opening slot for fellow Brit-legends, The Libertines
Opening the show for The Libertines is no easy feat, and last night the job went to Reverend and the Makers, a band who have certainly had good practice playing large crowds in their expansive career, including an opening slot on Oasis’ last ever tour and a gig supporting the Arctic Monkeys. Like The Libertines, Reverend represent a quintessential British rock band, tightening their sound through years of touring and thus have developed a complex sound incorporating many styles of music including electronic, pop and indie, culminating in their most recently released album, Mirrors.
With only half an hour to showcase their talent, Reverend meandered their way through their expansive career, playing older song like Open Your Window seamlessly alongside the newer tracks like Black Widow. All songs gained a good reception, prompting the first mosh pits and jumping around of the night.Dressed in what looked like a Marks and Spencer woven cardigan, frontman John McLure made a valiant attempt to warm the crowd up which was well received – he even led the audience in a round of high knees during one song which at the very least warmed everyone up on a cold night. The highlight of the night was their final song, Silence is Talking, featuring a stellar performance by Laura McLure belting out the trumpet riff, then running to background vocals before whipping out a melody on the chime. Reverend’s passion was evident by the energy they put into every beat, making a perfect start to the night before Sleaford Mods and of course, the mighty Libertines.
