Single Review: Honey Gentry - 'Dreamlover'

In the words of the great American abolitionist and activist Harriet Tubman, 'Every great dream begins with a dreamer.' Luckily for us, Honey Gentry is not just an awe-inspiring singer-songwriter, she’s a kaleidoscopic dreamer.

On Gentry’s latest single Dreamlover, she explores the endless haunting of a lover living on solely within her dreams. The twisted fantasy of the single makes Dreamlover a provocatory alternative lullaby possessed by a unique darkness. An eerie sheen is hushed across the track’s opening, like fog swarming across the rolling countryside. The almost-Hispanic ring to collaborator Ruben Elbrond-Palmer’s softened guitar matches the tonally disparate quality of the single.

A track as reliant on sparsity as it is on Gentry’s whispering vocals, Dreamlover’s chorus chants with a cult-like motif. Whilst lyrics ‘It was wrong but it felt right / In my dreams, in my dreams’ break through the silence with a disturbed cry, the likes of lines ‘I will never forget that night / In my dreams, In my dreams’ lace the audience with seduction. As Gentry tumbles around the creative chambers of her sleep-dependent mind, twisting and turning to find a grip on something tangible to comprehend, lyrics ‘Dream of another / Dream lover’ weave a sultry narrative and journey within the mind.

"Gentry tumbles around the creative chambers of her sleep-dependent mind, twisting and turning to find a grip on something tangible."

For someone engrossed and engaged with life’s hidden mysticism, it’s no surprise to see Honey Gentry pen a track on a metaphysical level. Crawling carefully through the spiritual universe, Dreamlover builds to an intense climax, bolstered by harking backing vocals. As the track curtails, Gentry floats off into the distance, back to the dream dimension, riding on a cushioned bed of spiralling guitar. Off into the palace of her dreams she goes. Float gently, Honey Gentry.
