On Gentry’s latest single Dreamlover, she explores the endless haunting of a lover living on solely within her dreams. The twisted fantasy of the single makes Dreamlover a provocatory alternative lullaby possessed by a unique darkness. An eerie sheen is hushed across the track’s opening, like fog swarming across the rolling countryside. The almost-Hispanic ring to collaborator Ruben Elbrond-Palmer’s softened guitar matches the tonally disparate quality of the single.
A track as reliant on sparsity as it is on Gentry’s whispering vocals, Dreamlover’s chorus chants with a cult-like motif. For someone engrossed and engaged with life’s hidden mysticism, it’s no surprise to see Honey Gentry pen a track on a metaphysical level. Crawling carefully through the spiritual universe, Dreamlover builds to an intense climax, bolstered by harking backing vocals. As the track curtails, Gentry floats off into the distance, back to the dream dimension, riding on a cushioned bed of spiralling guitar. Off into the palace of her dreams she goes.
