Lucy Redfern experienced the 'wonderful chaos' that are Wargasm on the main stage at Rock City, as the band are becoming a fast favourite amongst our writers at The Mic.
Electronic rock. Numetal. Post Hardcore. Industrial metal. These are all terms I’ve heard thrown around when it comes to categorizing Wargasm’s unique sound into a single genre. Since cementing their name in the metal scene in 2018, before even having an album, Wargasm had branded themselves as a wonderfully rowdy but equally talented duo, with the ability to stir up a crowd of any shape or size. Heading out on a UK tour to celebrate their first album release, Venom, I got to experience the wonderful chaos of Sam Matlock and Milkie Way first-hand.
Graduating from its smaller, sister venue Rescue Rooms, to Nottingham’s very own Rock City, Wargasm brought their new-and-improved stellar setlist to a packed audience. Combining fan favourite tracks such as Spit, Pyro Pyro, and Fuckstar with new songs from their debut album Venom, Wargasm boasted a high energy but equally musically diverse setlist, bringing original Wargasm fans and newer fans together in a synergy of chaos.
If the energetic numetal nature of the Wargasm’s music wasn’t enough to get you going, both Sam and Milkie play equal parts in really riling up the crowd. The duo make it clear that they won’t accept anything but unruly mayhem with frontman Sam at one point actually stopping a poor attempt at a circle pit to tell the crowd to increase the energy. ‘This isn’t All Time Low or Machine Gun Kelly,’ he exclaimed ‘pick up the energy!’ As expected, the next few minutes were a sweaty jumble of bodies crashing into other, crowd surfing and screaming.
"The duo make it clear that they won’t accept anything but unruly mayhem..."
Earlier this year, The nu-metal duo hit a landmark in their career with hit single bang ya head: a collaboration with nu-metal giant Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. Expectedly, bringing Bizkit-Wargasm energy to a live show did not disappoint, providing the biggest pit of the show which not even Sam could argue with this time.
The duo went out with a bang, finishing the night with what I would argue as the band's most epic track: Spit. Sam wasted no time leaping onto the crowd, belting the hook of the song whilst crowd surfing on top of a sea of outstretched hands. Admittedly, deciding to crowd surf whilst holding a cabled microphone perhaps wasn’t Sam Matlock’s smartest move. But the frontman miraculously avoided getting tangled in the crowd, scrambling back on stage to join Milkie in bidding the audience a good night.
With their UK tour only just getting started and having secured a slot on the Download 2024 lineup, it's safe to say that Wargasm don’t plan on going anywhere and will be gracing our stages again in the near future. I can’t wait to see what crazy live shows, unexpected collaborations and genre-defying music Sam and Milkie have under their belt for the rest of 2023 and 2024.
