Ben gives us an insight into the venues, line up and charities involved with Notts day festival Hockley Hustle 2019, which promises to be a day dedicated to celebrating our local community and music for some great causes.
As a city, Nottingham is one of the best in the UK for producing vibrant one-day festivals with great entertainment for great causes. On 27th October, Hockley Hustle will return once again to dazzle punters and raise money for charity. The festival has been running since 2006 and now hosts over thirty-five venues across Hockley in the city centre, including Broadway Cafe Bar, Rough Trade, The Bodega, Nottingham Contemporary and JamCafé.
Celebrating the very best of what the city has to offer across its most eccentric, eclectic and independent district, Hockey Hustle festival has raised over £150,000 for some excellent charities since its inception. Thousands of revelers, hundreds of artists and dozens of venues will once again gather to throw one of the best parties of the year, all while giving something back to the local community.
This year, The Mic is proud to team up with the festival to provide dynamic coverage of the event on the day, whilst giving our readers insight into the behind-the-scenes action as well as introducing some of the artists performing. At 2019’s event, around 300 Nottingham acts will be performing across the vast array of venues, including the latest addition to Nottingham’s creative music scene - Metronome.

This year, an array of charities are being supported: Emmanuel House (supporting Nottingham’s homeless community); Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum (assisting asylum seekers and refugees in the local area); Rethink Mental Health (campaigning for better mental health in our city); IMARA (helping young people who’ve suffered sexual abuse); and Equation (enabling communities to build equal relationships free from abuse). As you can see, Hockley Hustle 2019 is an incredible opportunity to participate in the local community whilst supporting charities and live music.
Nottingham has one of the most rapidly expanding music scenes in the country – its open mic scene has helped the likes of Jake Bugg and Saint Raymond hone their craft, whilst the jazz, hip-hop and metal communities are receiving more focus than ever. Well-known for being a springboard for Nottingham acts, Hockley Hustle has seen Jake Bugg play at the Broadway Cafe Bar in 2010, whilst Natalie Duncan, Ronika, Saint Raymond and Liam Bailey have also all cut their teeth at the festival.
In addition to the released line-up, organisers tend to throw in a few surprises each year too. Examples include Liam Bailey and Harleighblu dueting with the 60 piece UFO Orchestra, the internationally adored Sheku Kanneh-Mason performing a stunning solo set, four-time World Champion DJ Mr Switch battling award winning beatboxer THePETEBOX, and the Hackney Colliery Band marching through town. The streets come alive with a carnival atmosphere with jugglers, stilt walkers, choirs and samba bands parading the district and this year will be no different; the Hustle delivers unforgettable experiences, every time. This year, Truth and Lies DJs are bringing the funkiest beats to Broad Street for the return of the spectacular Hockley Hustle Silent Disco, and, with several channels to get stuck into, the stompers are in for a treat.

As expected with an event which caters to so many interests over a wide array of venues, Hockley Hustle is powered by a merry band of dedicated volunteers who make sure everyone has a great time. There are roles available still to help this year in checking wristbands on the door, setting up and packing down the festival, and collecting donations in buckets – if you want to be involved, join the website at hockleyhustle.co.uk/volunteer.
Festival organisers are also happy to announce the return of their activity programme for smaller humans, dubbed Young Hustlers. Sneinton Market, Nonsuch Studios, City Arts and The Carousel will all be taken over with creative activities for the day, and information can be found at younghustlers.co.uk.
For food fanatics, Nottingham Street Food Club will once again be bringing the best local street food vendors to the festival. Plus, some of Hockley’s superb eateries will be offering discounted food for wristband holders.
2019’s programme is filled to the brim with talent, all performing at a diverse array of venues and stages. At 31K, one of Hockley’s most popular independent bars, Jonny Olley and Tori Sheard will be highlighting just why they have been dubbed two of the city’s most talented songwriters. Meanwhile at The Bodega, some of Nottingham’s most exciting bands hit the main stage; Reflektor and Sancho Panza are both playing eagerly anticipated sets, while the secret headliner will ramp up the suspense to the very end.

Fresh from a Rock City slot at Dot to Dot Festival, Soft Girls & Boys Club will take to Broadway Cinema alongside the likes of Megatrain, Adam Peter Smith and another special guest. Over at Das Kino, a contemporary lineup of new and old-school hip-hop, electronic, jazz and acoustic will be on display, with Cheshire collective Exchecker’s set looking to be an early highlight of the day, showcasing their glistening old-skool LA-inspired hip-hop with darker, contemporary undertones.
Faradays’ eclectic line-up sees wonderkid and hotly-tipped singer-songwriter Remy, the infectious Fading Blonde and jazz stalwarts Major Ruse all play, whilst Mollie Ralph & Chloe Rodgers’ joint set at Fox & Grapes will be a show not to miss, performing after the brilliant Jinda Biant. The Angel will also showcase some talented bands, with Black Cats & Magpies, Boats On The Ocean and Ava Saint all performing.
Unsurprisingly, there are a host of incredible Nottingham-based singer-songwriters all demonstrating the array of talent across the city. Myles Knight, Kelsey and The Embers, Joey Collins, Wilted Flower, Ben Mark Smith, Olly Hensby, Big Ears, Jaque Seviour and Matthew Moore will be dotted around, whilst the Revolution Pride Stage will see pop favourite Rob Green, Nina Smith and Tash Bird all perform in celebration of local LGBTQ+ artists.
Whilst Sunflower Thieves’ set at Jamcafé and Jerub’s set at Suede are not to be missed, one of the most packed line-ups is offered by Rough Trade, who link up with BBC Introducing to provide sets from Laurie Illingworth, Mollie Ralph, Vega Bay, Velvet Blush, Camille Christel and a special guest.
