The Mic Recommends...

Check out Tabitha and Roxann's thoughts on new music from Machine Gun Kelly and Landon Tewers.

Taurus – Machine Gun Kelly feat. Naomi Wild

Serving as the lead single from the soundtrack of his new film, Machine Gun Kelly (Colson Baker) brings us his familiar, angsty sound to set a precedent for the tone of this semi-autobiographical piece. Having just been released in the U.S after its premiere at the Berlin film festival in February, the film, starring Baker himself, once again tackles ideas of the ‘rock-and-roll’ lifestyle he has been leading and the harmful, transformative power that drug addiction can hold over your life. For long time listeners of Baker like myself, this single is very reminiscent of his older project Hotel Diablo, a similarly themed, cautionary tale of an album. The similarities become more noticeable considering Naomi Wild’s feature on the track, after her collaboration on Glass House, one of the most played songs off Baker’s 2019 album. Providing an interesting medium between his ‘mumble rap’ career and his short stint as a pop punk star, Baker could be venturing back into old territory with Taurus, which could divide his listeners, while equally attracting them to his newer endeavours outside of music. Over You – Landom Tewers feat. Waynewood & JavyDade

Landon Tewers does something to me. Maybe it’s his disturbing, ironic honesty or his flirtatious enunciation – I’m just not sure. He’s best known as the lead singer in The Plot In You, that’s the way I discovered this secret black hole of his solo career, at least. His newest release, Over You, has a groove, R&B inflexion, as well as an obsess-worthy dance-y bridge that binds verse and chorus. It also greets us to Landon’s two features that bring rap into his vision: a stylistic choice that I’ve waited for Landon to adopt into his solo career. This project is so far removed from The Plot In You, serving as a haven for guilty pleasure in both style and lyricism. For example, Landon’s solo music loves to sing about all things X-rated to the extent that I brand him for this. Expect phallic talk. Expect controversial gender roles to the extent that they’re kinks. Expect to put it into a special playlist. Roxann Yus
