Live Review: slowthai @ Rock City

Megan-Rose Greener reviews slowthai's performance at Nottingham's Rock City.

slowthai burst on stage and without any chatter dove straight into his new album TYRON. It became instantly clear that the crowd are just as big of a fan of his new album than they are his older, more recognisable (lets just say it how it is) bangers! The room went completely insane. There wasn’t a patch of Rock City dancefloor not moshing from this point all the way through his set.

slowthai’s energy was a little different than usual. He revelled in slower songs like Momentary Bliss or Push, and an unheard song he showed the crowd had a much more positive outlook than any of his earlier stuff. Think less carnage, more upbeat and with an air of care and concern for his pretty young crowd, often pausing songs to make sure everyone in the pits was looking out for each other. Has fatherhood tamed slowthai?

The end of his set proved not. As soon as the classics started rolling out, he instantly uplifted the room and gave us that chaotic energy we know and love. He performed them flawlessly, a real pro, continuing even when an audience member flung a drink in his face (much to his annoyance).

''He instantly uplifted the room and gave us that chaotic energy we know and love''

slowthai continues to be one of the best artists on the scene right now. One piece of advice; get yourself to a Slowthai gig before he really explodes. You won’t be sorry, just be sure to not throw a drink right at him.
